Website owners ‘must try harder’ when it comes to cookie compliance

20th February 2012

According to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO), Website owners ‘must try harder’ on complying with the new cookies law.

In December the ICO published updated guidance for UK Website owners, setting out specific examples of what compliance looks like.

The UK government revised the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, which come into force in the UK on 26 May 2012, to address new EU requirements. The Regulations make clear that UK businesses and organisations running websites in the UK need to get consent from visitors to their websites in order to store cookies on users’ computers.
A cookie is a small file that a website puts on a user’s computer so that it can remember something, for example the users preferences, at a later time.

Speaking about the changes, Scott Winstanley, Head of Digital for Digital Marketing Agency Parker Sandford, said: Using cookies is a common practice for many website owners. Using cookies allows website owners to do many thing such as analysing consumer browsing habits or remembering a users preferences.  The introduction of ‘cookie compliance’ means that by May this year all businesses running websites in the UK will need to be compliant.
